My childhood and early years were spent in rural East Sussex. At 14 I attended Saturday morning lessons at Hastings School of Art and two years later in 1960 I enrolled there on a full time foundation course. Sadly, family finances were not sufficient for me to continue and after two years I left both education and home to work and make my own way in London.
My first job was in Store Window display but this was not well paid and I moved on and became a junior editorial assistant on the Illustrated London News and then later the Home Editor’s secretary on Family Circle magazine. Here I developed a skill in re-writing practical instructions to make them clearer. From this I went on to work freelance for a number of publications, designing projects with diagrams and instructions for readers to make. I also had several practical books published.
In the sixties and seventies, evening classes were reasonably priced and I took courses in many subjects including life drawing, painting, printmaking, pottery, woodworking, silver jewellery and other practical subjects. All have been useful. Marriage and children took up most of the seventies and eighties, but in 1981 I attended a sculpture class with the late Trevor Collis where I practised modelling and mould making skills. In 1989 I modelled the “Alice Through the Looking Glass” for Guildford Castle Gardens.
In 1994, together with twelve fellow sculptors, we started the Surrey Sculpture Society at Chilworth Manor. I was a Chairman between 1999 and 2002. The society now has in excess of 300 members from Surrey and the surrounding counties and mounts very successful exhibitions at various venues throughout the South east from April to October each year. I exhibit at many of these. www.surreysculpture.org.uk
I also take part in the Brighton Open Houses in May and the Hassocks Open Houses in June. Between October and April I concentrate on making new works and catching up with casting the editions for the next round of exhibitions. I also undertake commissions and enjoy working with clients to make sculptures which realise their ideas.
I give demonstrations and teach Various aspect of practical sculpture and other craft subjects to small groups and individual sculptors.
